Interdisciplinary Functional Restoration
Interdisciplinary Functional Restoration
At SpineOne, we apply a biopsychosocial approach to spine care, meaning we treat the whole person, not just the diagnosis. This integrated, interdisciplinary treatment model is becoming the new standard of spine care.
Our approach includes:
- Evidence-based Treatment. SpineOne’s Clinical Pathways and treatment modalities use the latest, proven science and technology. We monitor outcomes as part of an international database, regularly updating protocols based on new scientific data.
- Medically-directed Care. From assessment and planning to delivery, one of our board-certified physicians directs all care, remaining involved and committed for the duration of treatment.
- Spine-specific Functional Restoration Program. SpineOne is the only center in California to feature the cutting edge DBC Active Back Care System, rebuilding strength, restoring function and improving range of motion in the specific de-conditioned spine areas.
The SpineOne team works collaboratively and closely in our state-of-the-art spine center to deliver integrated care and powerful outcomes. Our team manages each patient through many referral sources including family practitioners, spine surgeons, physiatrists, interventional pain specialists, attorneys, claims examiners and rehabilitation nurse case managers. The SpineOne Interdisciplinary team includes:
- Board-certified medical specialists experienced in physical, rehabilitation and pain medicine
- Spine-specialized therapists and rehabilitation clinicians trained in the latest evidence-based active approaches for back and neck pain
- DBC-certified clinicians and technicians trained in the DBC Active Back Care System and cognitive behavioral approach
- A licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience in cognitive behavioral therapy techniques proven beneficial for patients with chronic pain
- A vocational specialist assisting patients in maintaining or returning to gainful employment
- Dedicated clerical and bilingual support staff
- Our patients and their families
We determine whether or not an individual will likely benefit from our interdisciplinary treatment approach by performing a comprehensive assessment given by a medical specialist, licensed clinical psychologist and spine specialized therapist. We discuss the prognosis including potential barriers to recovery, openly sharing with the patient and their family.
Following this assessment, the team may recommend a less intensive program if a full program isn’t needed to achieve optimal results. This is a unique option for patients, physicians and payers, as most functional restoration programs only offer a full tertiary program. A secondary program may be the optimal treatment dose, including post-surgical patients. We match the patient with their correct service level, and our interdisciplinary evaluation places individuals in the proper program based on need.
Interdisciplinary Functional Restoration treatment programs include:
Individualized treatment planning. SpineOne develops every individual’s treatment plan to reflect his or her unique needs. We are active, compassionate listeners, ensuring we obtain critical information and respecting each patient and their family as part of our team.
Education. We empower our patients, integrating education into each treatment plan. This includes individual and group treatment sessions, lectures and informational sessions, handouts and other educational material, plus teaching aids so each person understands their condition and ultimately becomes an active participant in their care.
Pain Management. SpineOne uses a multi-modal treatment approach including medication optimization, physical re-activation, education and cognitive behavioral management. We want patients to understand the complex relationship between pain and dysfunction and their various options for pain management.
“Research suggests that multidisciplinary care is beneficial for most persons with chronic pain, and likely should be considered the treatment of choice for persons who are at risk for, or who have, chronic pain and disability. “

SpineOne results are durable with a low recidivism level. The program brings individuals to an improved functional level, practicing and maintaining optimal functioning as independently as possible through exercise, behavioral changes and outlook adjustment. High quality peer-reviewed studies demonstrate that interdisciplinary programs with a functional restoration approach consistently bring a high return-to-work rate and decreased future healthcare demands.
