Presurgical Assessment/ Post Surgical Rehabilitation
Presurgical Assessment/Post Surgical Rehabilitation
SpineOne Pre and Post-Surgical Pathways are non-operative solutions for patients who have undergone or are considering surgery. We work closely with spine surgeons and physicians to optimize surgical results.
Pre-surgical Psychological Screening
To maximize a patient’s successful spine surgery outcome, SpineOne uses an evidence-based assessment protocol developed at leading spine research centers. The evaluation includes a full assessment of psychosocial functioning with a clinical psychologist. In addition, functional abilities are assessed and an evidence-based mechanical evaluation is performed with one of our spine specialized clinicians. This pre-surgical screening can provide all of the following:
- Improve treatment outcome by screening out patients prone to a poor outcome (failed back syndrome)
- Provide a strong, empirically validated rationale to avoiding invasive interventions in cases where the surgeon feels uncomfortable about surgery
- Improve overall patient outcome and decrease treatment duration by avoiding ineffective procedures
- Improve surgical patient’s outcome by identifying and, when necessary, treating emotional and behavioral problems
- Identify patients likely to develop medication or compliance problems
- Reduce the number of problem patients in the surgeon’s practice
Post-surgical Rehabilitation
SpineOne secondary or tertiary programs are available dependant on the patient’s individual needs. Studies demonstrate that early, appropriate, active rehabilitation is safe and improves surgery success. Our physiatrist team assists with medication management, implementing a tailored, medically supervised program meeting the individual needs of the referring spine surgeon or physician. If psychosocial barriers to recovery are present, it may be necessary to implement an interdisciplinary tertiary program including a multimodal disability management program with cognitive behavioral classes and individual counseling. SpineOne is a unique, post-surgical program with a proven track record. However, if a spine surgeon wishes to modify or implement a program specifically for their patient population, we’ll customize a rehabilitation program.
SpineOne currently offers post-surgical lumbar and cervical spine rehabilitation for:
- Fusion Surgery with or without instrumentation
- Standard Discectomy/Laminectomy Surgery
- Disc Replacement
- Minimally Invasive Surgeries (i.e., Endoscopic, IDET, Disc RF and Coblation)
The DBC system is the core of our physical program. Numerous spine centers use Documentation Based Care to rehabilitate patients after surgery. It’s unique training devices allow controlled segmental movement to facilitate the deep stabilizing spine muscles while minimizing stress to the operated functional spinal unit. Thousands of patients have successfully benefited from DBC’s safe rehabilitation protocols. We instruct patients in functional activities, work simulation, spine stabilization exercise and cardiopulmonary training. SpineOne also offers appropriate bracing and other pain relieving home modalities.
